In this mystery Special, a pair of lovers are found at a lonely spot on the Noto peninsula having apparently committed double suicide. In the nearby city of Kanagawa, the mystery writer Sugimoto Ryuji finds himself in a mystery of his own when a woman claiming to be a fan of his latest novel, "A Distant Memory," asks for a subscription to the newspaper it is being serialized in. Only she wants to start in the middle of the story and not at the beginning. Thinking this strange, Sugimoto and his assistant Tasaka Fujiko soon believe they can link the woman, Shiota Yoshiko, to the double suicide and the possibility that she actually killed the pair herself. Problem is, Yoshiko is married to the Secretary of a prominent Minister of the government which will pit strong forces against anyone accusing Yoshiko of anything. But Sugimoto's instincts as a mystery writer keep pushing him to find the truth; even if it means a greater threat to his and to Fujiko's life in the process...
