Synopsis
The brutal murder of a family of three occurs in a quiet residential neighbourhood of Shinagawa in Tokyo. Detective Nanami Yoichiro (Sorimachi Takashi) of Gotenyama Police Precinct rushes to the crime scene. He finds only the second son, 5-year-old Nagahara Koji had survived because he had hidden at the back of a closet, and places him into protective custody. In fact, Nanami lost his parents in a fire when he was 7 years old and was also separated from his younger sister Yukiko (Kanjiya Shihori) when she was adopted by the wealthy Higuchis a year later. He is concerned about Koji whose parents and older brother were suddenly taken from him at the mere age of 5. An investigation task force is immediately set up. Nanami is ordered to work with a senior detective, Kagawa Takashi (Yashima Norito), by Inspector Takasu Seiji (Takahashi Katsumi), the head of the First Investigative Division’s Third Section. The Third Section led by the bossy Takasu is a group of tough guys nicknamed “Takasu’s Army”. Nanami and Kagawa suspect a guy in the neighbourhood Kuki Yuta (Ryusei Ryo), who keeps abusing animals. But there is no clear witness statement and Kuki is dropped from the investigation. One year later, Nanami has been handpicked by Takasu and become a member of the First Investigative Division’s Third Section, but still has not been able to get hold of important clues on the Shinagawa family murder case and the investigation has made little headway. However, at that juncture, a mother, Sawamatsu Yuko and her son, Naozumi (Yamaguchi Daichi), who live in a house at Kamata in Ota District are brutally murdered. Besides the personal belongings of the Shinagawa family murder case and the same towel left behind at the crime scene, the same footwear size and manufacturer are detected from the footprints. All the evidence suggests that the criminal is the same person. However, Makabe Shigeki (Osugi Ren), the director of the First Investigative Division, announces that a joint investigation task force will not be set up due to political pressure. Nanami and the detectives at the scene protest. Right after that, Nanami learns that the murdered Naozumi was an acquaintance of Takasu’s second daughter, Asako (Natsuna). Meanwhile, Nanami notices that a weekly magazine reporter, Kakizaki Isao (Denden), has been snooping around Yukiko. Yukiko has succeeded as a pianist in Europe and returned to Japan in triumph. She changed her name to Nakazato Misa for some reason, but Kakizaki has sniffed out the truth and has been trying to pester her.
