I’ve written about Anna Tsuchiya before when I uploaded #467950 by Spin Aqua, the only album that band released in their short career. Soon afterwards she signed with Mad Pray Records (owned by Avex Trax) and began work on this debut mini-album. There is a blatant shift in subject and style compared to Tsuchiya’s music with Spin Aqua. Her early solo work is more provocative, both lyrically and visually in promotional material, with two of her solo albums having obviously sexual titles. Interestingly, and uncommonly, there were no singles prior to the release of Taste My Beat, the mini-album simply hit the shelves with no fan-fare ahead of time. It received critical acclaim for Tsuchiya herself, with a lot of the focus placed on her vocals. If you compare her singing with Spin Aqua to any of her solo work you can hear that she opts for a deeper voice. Humorously, Tsuchiya attributed to this to all of her smoking. The vocals and lyrics do seem to reflect Tsuchiya’s rebellious and wild nature of the time. I mean, she hit a fashion model with a chair for God’s sake, heh.
