If I remember correctly, it was the page in the manga that presented this equation that finally got me into reading Solanin. The manga's been around for a few years already and I only got around to reading it this year. It was fortunate for me too because after I had finished reading, I also found out that the movie version was about to come out already (funny thing is, I can say the same thing about BECK.)
Now, one of the reasons why I wanted to watch the movie version (even though I already knew the story) was because I also found out that Miyazaki Aoi was going to play the part of Meiko, the female lead. Honestly, I'm not that big of a fan of Miyazaki's but I've liked her enough since one of her previous movies ただ、君を愛してる (Tada Kimi wo Aishiteru) or Heavenly Forest.
So anyway, I thought I'd watch it without subtitles (and as I like to joke: I'll understand it. With my こころ!) but fortunately (for me? for us?) Ais decided to pick it up and do the subs for it. The rest, as they say, is history now that we have this release. Hooray!
So, anyway, what is Solanin about? Hmm. How do I put it...

This slice of life story shows us the struggles of Meiko and her boyfriend Taneda as they try to lead normal lives. Meiko is frustrated at the dullness of the life that she's been living so far and on an impulsive streak decides to change everything by quitting her job as an office worker. While she remains at a loss over what she truly wants to do, she decides to push Taneda to go out and try to achieve something great through his music. With the support of their friends, they do manage to try their best and yet they still had to contend with some harsh realities and things didn't work out as well as they had hoped. After they had come to accept what they had just faced, they slowly tried to recover and do their best once more. But then an unexpected tragedy happened and Meiko once again had to face the question what it is that she needs to do to in order to continue on.
--Is how I would put it. I suppose it sounds too simple by the way I put it but I still think it's still worth watching! I'm pretty sure there are at least one or two ideas in the story that a lot of you will be able to relate with.
Anyway, without further ado, here's the Skewed Studios high quality release of Solanin! I hope you all enjoy!
