Synopsis A case of arson occurs in a quiet residential neighbourhood in the outskirts of Tokyo. Hasebe Akiko (Tanaka Rena), a journalist from Teito Shimbun’s local news desk, rushes over to the scene with a rookie, Katsuragi Kippei (Chiba Yudai), and starts to cover the crime. Detective Nashiyama Rieko (Harada Mieko) of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s First Investigative Division is in charge of the scene. Akiko catches sight of her and approaches without hesitation. Katsuragi panics. But Rieko and Akiko seem to be on familiar terms. The dead person is 66-year-old Kawaguchi Toyo, an accommodating old woman who is the chairman of the town’s neighbourhood association. According to a member of the association, Arai Tomohiro (Kashiwabara Shuji), Toyo had been having problems with Kobayashi Mieko (Terajima Shinobu), who lives in the neighbourhood. Akiko and Katsuragi immediately pay a visit to Mieko’s house. However, they are taken aback by the facade of the house. Barbed wire is stretched across the fence like a high barricade. Big stones are arranged about the garden … … The queer house is just like a fortification. Akiko pushes the buzzer, then peers into the house through the gap when Mieko reluctantly comes out in response. The interior of the house is quite different from the exterior. It is a tidy, cosy home decorated with intricate tapestries. According to the information Akiko has gathered, Mieko’s troubles with people living in the neighbourhood started about 10 years ago. With her isolation from her neighbours, the barricade got higher and higher. It was around the time that Mieko seemed to start using a white parasol when she went outside. During the same period, Mieko’s husband, Kobayashi Masafumi (Hayashi Yasufumi) resigned from his teaching job at a private high school and became a teacher at a cram school … … Akiko and Katsuragi call on Mieko’s younger sister, Eto Fusae (Itaya Yuka), in order to make further enquiries about Mieko. Like Mieko and Kobayashi, Fusae and her husband, Taishi (Takuma Takayuki), do not have children. They appear to be a very happy couple. However, Akiko somehow feels that something is not right about this couple. At that moment, another case of arson takes place. Akiko loses her composure and hysterically screams before the blazing flames. It is her fortress-like home that is on fire. Then skeletal remains are discovered from the charred pile of rubble.
