Junichi Arai is one of Japan's leading textile creators, a man whose incorporation of metals, plastics and other new materials to the traditional techniques has changed conceptions of what textiles are and helped project Issey Miyake and other Japanese designers into the global spotlight. He is still very much in the vanguard even now at the age of eighty. We report from his workshop in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture, introducing his latest works and delving into the sources of his astonishing creative energy.
